Raising My Voice is a 6 week story-telling and leadership training program, designed for and by people who have experienced incarceration. Raising My Voice helps participants to claim their personal narrative and hone leadership and public speaking skills.

What is Raising My Voice?

Raising My Voice enabled me to come out of my shell and share my story with others. Which for me was real hard, because the last time I told someone something, that person testified against me in court.

FAQs

How do I know if I’m the right candidate for Raising My Voice?

If you have experienced incarceration, are willing to commit to participating fully during the course of the cycle, and have a willingness to share your story, then you are the perfect fit. No prior training or preparation is required. It’s fine if you’ve been home a few days or for many years.

What will I learn from the program?

Practically, you will learn storytelling skills and public speaking techniques. On a deeper level, many graduates from the program have described a sense of empowerment and motivation which has helped in many areas of life.

What types of opportunities and resources come from the program?

During the course of RMV, participants more deeply recognize their own dignity and identity. This can open doors to new personal and professional opportunities. There is also a $30 stipend granted for each session you attend during your cohort. Additionally, there are many programs graduates have access to that maintain a deep community that is resourced and committed. You can also apply for other opportunities like The Speakers’ Bureau as a graduate.
